Perle Hops: The Secret Behind Great Pilsners and Irish Reds
In this instalment of our Storeroom Series, we’re turning the spotlight on a hop that often works quietly in the background, bringing balance and finesse without shouting for attention — Perle. This classic German hop might not have the tropical punch of Citra or the piney hit of Simcoe, but when it comes to structure, subtle complexity, and clean bitterness, Perle more than holds its own.
A Quiet Hero in the Brewhouse
Perle might not be a headline act, but it’s a vital part of the line-up. It’s the kind of hop that lets other ingredients shine while quietly holding the whole beer together — and that’s exactly why we love it. Whether it’s the crisp snap of a cold pilsner or the smooth finish of an Irish red, Perle helps us bring balance to the glass.
We use Perle in two of our most popular beers: Loop Head Pilsner and Atlantic Irish Red Ale — two very different styles, united by their need for balance and drinkability. Let’s take a closer look at how Perle brings these beers together.
Loop Head Pilsner – Crisp, Clean and Coastal
Inspired by the windswept tip of Clare’s west coast, Loop Head Pilsner is our modern take on a classic European lager. Brewed with a light malt base and cold-conditioned for a clean finish, it’s all about refreshment. Perle is used early in the boil here, providing the underlying bitterness that gives the beer its crisp edge. Later, it plays a supporting role alongside Saaz, adding a hint of herbal spice and helping to round out the finish.
Perle’s smooth bitterness ensures that nothing overshadows the pilsner’s delicate malt character — just enough bite to keep you coming back for another sip, without any lingering harshness.
Atlantic Irish Red Ale – Smooth and Balanced
In our Atlantic Irish Red Ale, our nod to the classic Irish Red, Perle helps achieve what every red ale needs: balance. With its moderate alpha acids and noble hop character, Perle is added at key points in the boil to provide gentle bitterness and a touch of earthy spice. It complements the caramel and biscuit notes from the malt bill rather than clashing with them, giving the beer that familiar rounded finish.
Perle doesn’t dominate — but you’d miss it if it weren’t there.
Next time you’re sipping on a Loop Head or Atlantic, give a little nod to this underrated gem of a hop. It’s doing more than you might think.
